Fridley Public Schools

Fridley High School AVID scholars, who were in the AVID Scholar Athletes class, showcased their leadership development and personal growth during final portfolio presentations held at the high school. Each student hosted their own table and presented individually to various members of Fridley Public Schools leadership in a one-on-one setting. Guests included Principal Kelly McConville, Assistant Principal Lamii Zarlee, District AVID Director Liz Jensen, Superintendent Brenda Lewis, Ph.D., Athletic Director Justin Reese, and several FHS staff members.

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a college and career readiness program designed to equip students, especially those in the academic middle, with the skills, strategies, and support needed to succeed in rigorous coursework and prepare for life after high school.

“These students reflected deeply this semester on their current performances and made comparisons to their future goals to create plans to bridge the gap,” said Lizzie Winkelman, AVID teacher and AVID Site Coordinator at FHS. “They all rose to the occasion to tackle a new class and uncover what they want their leadership skills to be and what performance and moral characteristics they want to live their lives by. I am proud of the work and growth they have done this semester.”

The students’ final portfolios featured reflections on what leadership means to them, their personal leadership vision, and the individuals who inspire them. Each presentation concluded with a leadership game plan—outlining their future goals and specific actions they plan to take to be positive leaders in their school and community.

The event served as a powerful celebration of student voice and leadership, and a reflection of AVID’s mission to empower students to achieve their full potential.
