On November 22, Fridley Middle School hosted a new event for 5th grade students and families. Students used their daily reading block to read to their parents, guardians and other family members in the media center. This event aimed to strengthen the connection between families and middle school students, encouraging active involvement during a period of transition from elementary to middle school.
The 5th grade team at FMS planned this event to increase family engagement. “This event opened the door for parents and guardians to come in and host small reading groups,” said Ashley Hufnagle, 5th grade teacher at FMS. “Students were super excited to read with their families.” Students whose parents were unable to attend collaborated with siblings in different grades from middle school and high school. Additionally, students formed small groups with other families and participated in other reading activities.
Due to its success, Hufnagle hopes this event will continue a few more times throughout the school year. Hufnagle said, “We appreciate everyone who attended and we’re excited to see an even bigger turn out at future events.”
