Fridley Public Schools

Experiencing unique and new fitness opportunities, Fridley High School (FHS) students enjoyed new archery and kickboxing equipment in their physical education classes provided by a grant from the Anoka County Statewide Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP). The grant funded complete archery equipment sets, which included compound bows, targets, and arrows. SHIP also provided 30 washable pairs of boxing gloves, 10 kickboxing bags, and a wall-mounted uppercut bag.

“Outside of competitive sports, some students may not be aware of the different ways that they can have fun while being active,” said Alisa Lowry, FHS physical education teacher. “Our students absolutely love these new units and continually ask when they can use this equipment again.”

According to Lowry, both new and innovative gym class units have many positive aspects. “Kickboxing has many other benefits in addition to the fitness component, such as allowing students to learn self-defense tools and helping them feel empowered,” she said. “Archery is an especially great sport for students in Minnesota.  Besides getting them outdoors and building strength, it can build their confidence and give students a sense of community when they connect with others with the same interest.”

Lowry said she is grateful to SHIP for supporting the expansion effort of the Fridley Physical Education program and providing well-rounded opportunities for students. “It’s a win-win. Our students learn new ways to increase their fitness levels, boost their confidence, feel empowered - all while having fun and developing new interests that can help them to stay mentally and physically healthy for a lifetime!”

Anoka County SHIP aims to “create healthier communities across Minnesota by expanding opportunities for active living, healthy eating, and tobacco-free living.” In addition to providing curriculum supplies, the organization has benefited Fridley Public Schools students through various departments - including Nutritional Services (fresh fruits and vegetables for students and culinary training for staff), Special Education (active recess alternative equipment) and the Community Education department (equipment for multiple age levels).
