The annual Middle Years Programme (MYP) Personal Project celebration showcased the independent research skills and diversified interests of 10th grade students at Fridley High School. Students chose a topic that they were passionate about, set an achievable goal related to that topic, and developed a deeper level of learning about that topic through independent research. They presented their personal projects using visual displays, demonstrations, websites and slideshows to proud families, staff and students on Wednesday, January 18. 

“This project brings to life all the skills they’ve learned throughout the years,” said MYP Coordinator Kari Reiter. She mentioned that the personal project allows the students to use the Approaches to Learning Skills, which are an integral part of the International Baccalaureate Programme. Essentially these skills teach students “how to learn.” They include communication, research, self-management, social and thinking skills. 

Students started working on these projects at the beginning of their 10th grade year, with topics ranging from artistic and creative endeavors, learning to cook new foods and exploring careers, to mental health issues, learning a new language and much more (see entire list here).

Many students noted that this project gave them the opportunity to research a topic more thoroughly than they usually would have time. Ariel Cavazos-Williams, who focused on acrylic painting for her topic, said that she has always loved painting, but this project allowed her to further experiment with different styles and techniques. Similarly, Alexis Thao was able to dig deeper into her cultural roots by researching the Hmong Paj Ntaub, which is the traditional flower cloth pattern symbolic to Hmong culture.

Some students even used this opportunity to create a physical product. Caron Horton focused on fashion design, fully designing his own hoodie and having it manufactured. Jordan Akkerman built a table, which he will continue to modify to fully build out a functioning train table. “What makes me a good leader is the ability to build relationships,” said Leamon Wehyee, reflecting on what she learned while immersed in this project. Wehyee’s project focused on her running for cheerleading captain of Fridley’s cheerleading team. “I’m a cheerleader and you have to be able to trust the people you are stunting with, nobody wants to get hurt.”

Reiter mentioned that this is a milestone in their education at Fridley Public Schools that occurs before they decide what is next for them as they move out of the MYP and into either the Career Programme (CP) or the Diploma Programme (DP). Students will now reflect on their project and write a paper to submit to the International Baccalaureate to be accessed.

“The students are so proud of their accomplishment,” said Reiter. “It’s exciting to really celebrate what students are able to achieve and show in their learning. I’m so excited to be a part of it.”
