The University of Wisconsin Eau Claire Jazz 1 band made a special visit to Fridley High School on Tuesday, December 3, giving students an unforgettable day of music and learning.
The visit was arranged by Siena Olson, the FHS band director and Mr. Baca, the director of the UW Eau Claire Jazz Bands, after Fridley High School (FHS) and Fridley Middle School (FMS) jazz bands attended the Eau Claire Jazz Festival in April 2024. Mr. Baca offered to bring the college jazz band to Fridley for a clinic and performance.
The day began with FHS jazz students performing for the college musicians. Jazz 1 followed with their own performance, showcasing music the Fridley students are preparing for upcoming shows. Afterward, the college musicians gave individual feedback to every high school student about their instrument and technique.
The middle school jazz band had a similar experience, with Jazz 1 joining them to offer advice and tips. All three bands—FHS, FMS, and Jazz 1—then combined for a group performance on stage, creating a powerful moment of musical collaboration.
The day ended with an inspiring performance by Jazz 1, leaving Fridley students amazed by their talent and professionalism. Eau Claire students also expressed admiration for the strong sense of community at Fridley and said they enjoyed their visit.
This visit provided Fridley’s young musicians with valuable lessons and memories, sparking new excitement for their musical journeys.
