Fridley Public Schools
School Board Appreciation Month Spotlight: Avonna Starck

When Avonna Starck decided to run for the Fridley School Board, her motivation was clear: she wanted to create a stronger connection between the district and the community. “I ran for school board because I felt that the community deserved a board that was active and present,” she explained. “Supporting our community's children is the most important job a person can do,” she added. Her pride today comes from what has been built together – a culture of greater communication, engagement, and trust.

Avonna believes wholeheartedly in the power of schools to shape the strength of a community. “Strong schools build strong communities and we see that in practice,” she said. She is proud of the school board’s collaboration with the City of Fridley, from working on the parks plan to partnering on safe walking routes for students. She also points to the district’s academic and athletic success, which has built community pride and produced outstanding graduates. Many of those graduates, she notes, return to Fridley to give back, creating a cycle of growth and generosity.

Serving on the school board is a year-round responsibility, and Avonna embraces that role fully. “Our work is 24/7/365! We are in constant communication – even outside of meeting times,” she shared. Whether it’s fundraising, lobbying at the legislature, meeting a parent for coffee, or attending a game, she and her fellow board members are always planning, listening, and working to support students, families, and staff.

Avonna’s dedication reflects her belief that representation matters, and that strong communication between schools and community builds a foundation for success.
