R. L. Stevenson (RLS) Elementary School Principal Daryl Vossler has announced his intent to retire at the end of this school year. Vossler, himself a former student of RLS, has served as the school's principal for 14 years. His retirement is effective July 1.

Superintendent Dr. Kim Hiel said that Fridley was lucky to have Vossler serve as one of its principals and that she has enjoyed working with him.  "As a principal, he has connected well with staff, families, and community members to prioritize the education of students. We are grateful for his numerous contributions to students and the district. He will be missed," she said.

Vossler said that he has worked with a very humble group of people who work tirelessly for students.  "It's been great to witness the work they do to support our kids and the concern they have for them as people,' he said. "They go above and beyond in their jobs, and I hope that is what I have done as well. I am proud of the strong sense of community Stevenson has and how this staff comes together to support not only kids and their families, but also each other." Click to read more...

Student Achievement
National History Day MN

Congratulations to Fridley Middle School (FMS) 8th grade students Emily Duba and Britney Merchan, who qualified for the National History Day Minnesota statewide competition! Duba and Merchan's exhibit project, "Loving v. Virginia; Breaking the Marriage Barrier," centered around the 1967 historic, landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down laws banning interracial marriage.

All FMS 8th grade students presented their projects at the schoolwide competition on February 13. More than 30 students were selected to advance to the regional competition. Due to COVID-19 statewide social distancing requirements,  the regional competition was held online.

This year, the state competition will be held virtually on May 2, with final round entries posted at 5 p.m. on the State History Day website and social media.

Both students expressed surprise and excitement upon learning their good news. "I was really excited when we found out," said Merchan.  Duba added, "I immediately thought, 'wow, our hard work paid off!' I wasn't expecting it but I am so excited."

FMS Individuals and Societies teacher Aaron Cuthbert said Duba and Merchan should be incredibly proud of themselves. "The statewide Minnesota competition is incredibly competitive compared to the nationwide event," he said. "It's always been said that if you make it to state in Minnesota, you have a nationals-caliber project."

Congratulations Emily and Britney - and good luck in the state competition!
