It is the middle of April, and we have about two more months left in the 2020-21 school year. It has been a challenging school year, but with a lot of support, our Fridley school community has remained strong. As we near the end of the school year, the following weeks will be exciting and full of celebratory accomplishments for our students as they successfully finish one grade, or one phase of their education, and prepare for the next one. We look forward to celebrating our students, and sharing their success with parents, staff and community.
Thank you and please take care of yourselves and your families, Fridley Public Schools Congratulations to the Fridley High School (FHS) Speech team who finished an impressive 2021 season with a final Section 4AA tournament held on April 7, 2021. Ten students earned high performance scores and competed in final rounds. In addition, FHS senior Lulu Schirmacher placed first in Extemporaneous Reading and is advancing to the State competition, which will take place on Friday, April 23.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Speech tournaments throughout the season were held virtually, and each team across the state competed at their home high school against students in their respective categories. Despite the challenges, the Fridley team competed at high levels - earning five first place finishes. Individual students also earned several top finishes throughout the season, including 21 first place medals in their categories. FHS's 36-member Speech team earned an impressive total of 86 medals for first through fifth place finishes throughout the season. Click to read in browser... Congratulations to the following
Congratulations to Fridley High School (FHS) senior Josh Franklin, who has been named the 2021 the Tri Metro Outstanding Senior Wrestler of the Year. Selected unanimously by all Tri Metro Wrestling coaches, Franklin earned the award following an excellent performance at the Minnesota State High School League Class AA state championship, where he finished fourth in the state in the 285 heavyweight class.
Franklin completes his varsity wrestling career, which began in 7th grade, as one of the top wrestlers to compete at Fridley. He is a four-time All-Conference award winner, four-time State entrant, and three-time State place winner - a first-time achievement in the Fridley wrestling program's history.
According to coach Eric Anderson, Franklin's work ethic, strong abilities, desire to win and attention to detail, makes him a standout students-athlete. "Each year, Josh has worked hard to achieve his goals and concentrated on his areas of weakness to become an exceptional wrestler," said Anderson. "It was a unanimous decision among us coaches when selecting the Outstanding Senior Wrestler of the Year. Coaches across all schools agreed there was no one else more deserving than Josh." As students can safely play their instruments while wearing masks, the drumline performed two drumline cadences, Raptor and X1. This was the band's first live performance in over a year! Our students kicked off and ended the celebration, which featured guest speakers, including City of Fridley Mayor Scott Lund. Way to go, FHS Drumline! The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recommends that all school-age youth returning to school youth sports, or extracurricular activities, and their families, to get tested every two weeks through the end of the school year. Students involved in any extracurricular activities or sports should get tested every week.
Testing, plus wearing masks and taking other precautions like social distancing and staying home (quarantining) when needed, are some of the best tools we have to limit the spread of COVID-19. By getting tested regularly until the end of the school year, we can help limit the spread of COVID-19 and keep schools open and sports operating.
Anyone could have COVID-19 and not know it. Getting tested regularly is the best way to know you are still healthy. If you don't have symptoms and have not been close to someone with COVID-19, you do not need to stay home while you wait for your test results.
COVID-19 Testing for Students and Families While it is not a requirement, regular testing complements other safety measures already in place, such as masking and social distancing. Getting tested every two weeks from now until the end of the school year can help keep schools open and sports operating, and ensure we are limiting the spread of COVID-19. Student COVID-19 Testing Update At Governor Walz's direction, the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) is working with school districts to make it easier for students to send off their saliva test kits. Students will now be able to send their Vault-at-Home tests back to the lab through their schools. How this works:
To help students comply with MDH's bi-weekly testing guidance and use at-home tests as a screening tool:
