We have reached the end of May, and that means we have two weeks of school left! We are proud and excited to celebrate the accomplishments of our students as they continue with their K-12 education or graduate high school, college and career ready. Congratulations to the Class of 2021 who will officially graduate from high school on Thursday, June 3, and congratulations to our 4-year-old Preschool class, 4th grade class, and 8th grade class who have finished one school-level and will begin a new level next fall. We are so proud of all of you!
Have a great Memorial Day holiday weekend! Fridley Public Schools Congratulations to the Fridley High School (FHS) cast, crew and orchestra of this spring's musical production, All Shook Up, which earned numerous Outstanding Overall and Individual Hennepin Theatre Trust Spotlight Education awards! "The Spotlight awards are the pinnacle of recognition for high school musical theater in the State of Minnesota," said Auditorium and Events Coordinator Dan Wold. "The All Shook Up cast and crew created a magical performance in spite of a challenging year, and we are proud of our students for earning this well-deserved recognition." A Fridley High School (FHS) freshman spent last summer contributing to his community by mowing the lawns of veterans, singles parents, and disabled and elderly neighbors, free of charge. Tyquan Bledsoe was the first student in Minnesota to complete the 50 Yard Challenge, which tasks young men and women to assist neighbors in need of lawn mowing service. The challenge is part of Raising Men Lawn Care Service, a national nonprofit organization that promotes commitment to service and inspires students to give back to the community in positive ways. Bledsoe was excited to join the cause and volunteered his time to complete the challenge of 50 yards mowed. "Helping people just puts a smile on my face," said Bledsoe. "It's a small action I can do in the community and it makes me feel like a superhero." Bledsoe was honored at the May 18, 2021 Fridley School Board meeting for his commitment to service. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School district, Fridley Public Schools instills a sense of community service, or "service as action," as a fundamental component of the IB curriculum framework. Congratulations to Fridley High School (FHS) juniors Greta McCoy and Andrew Stevenson who earned the Harvard Prize Book Award and Yale Book Award, respectively. Through hands-on learning and real-life experiences, Fridley High School students continue to benefit from a partnership between the school's Emergency Medical Responder/ Emergency Medical Technician (EMR/EMT) program and the Fridley Fire Department. FHS students enrolled in the EMR and EMT classes learn directly from experienced firefighters who are currently working in the field of Emergency Medical Services (EMS).
In the EMR and EMT classes, FHS students learn how to deal with a wide array of EMS scenarios, which include patient assessments related to to medical and trauma scenarios, such as cardiac arrest, anaphylactic shock, external bleeding, and spinal cord injuries. Working with professional equipment, the trainees are taught skills required in emergency medicine and patient interactions, like airway and oxygen management, back boarding, splinting and bracing, bleeding control, shock management, and the administering of medications. In addition, students learn how these situations influence rescue operations and fire suppression efforts.
EMR/EMT teacher Eric Anderson said the experiences the fire department provides are invaluable to students. "All the hands-on and real-life training helps students to understand the 'why' in the educational process," said Anderson. "Students love the challenges, the excitement, and the varied experience from typical school work. I see many of our students thrive while working through these real-world scenarios."
