Three students are reading at their table

As Hayes Elementary third grade teacher, Heidi Hall, led her students back to their classroom after specialist class on September 11, students excitedly noticed green, black and white balloons framing the classroom entrance and a familiar sign on their door. Students instantly recognized the Starbucks Coffee logo, but this sign read “Starbooks” and showed a mermaid reading a book. Hall put on a green apron and announced to her students that she was their “bookista” and would help them sample and taste different genres of books that day in their classroom turned cozy coffee shop.

It was a successful and joyous first week of school around the district!

Some students got a jump on the school year on Tuesday when Fridley Middle School opened its doors to 5th graders and any new 6th, 7th and 8th grade students, allowing them to acquaint themselves with the school a day before their peers joined them. Similarly, 9th grade students received a rousing welcome from Fridley High School staff and 11th and 12th grade Link Crew members that culminated in an assembly filled with fun games.

Transitioning from one school to another is a big milestone in the lives of our students and families. While we celebrate the achievements and growth of scholars making the leap to a new school level, the exciting prospect of starting a new chapter in their educational journey may feel daunting to them. In the matter of a summer they go from an environment where they blossomed into the oldest group of students to an unfamiliar setting where they have been reset to the youngest class.

Ms. Claggett and her family

Mia Claggett, daughter of Hayes Elementary IB Coordinator Cara Claggett, was surprised to discover her mom wasn’t alone in picking her up from Tiger Club on Thursday, July 20. Her dad, Josh, who has been deployed for the past 10 months, was waiting around the corner to reunite with her. He had returned home a day early, which Mia didn’t know until this special moment.
